[edit] How to Twitter
At Faculty Academy 2008, you’re probably going to hear a few new terms being used. One term that has been around since the last Faculty Academy is Twitter.
[edit] Sign Up
Signing up is easy. Just go to twitter.com and click the "Get Started - Join" button and create a username and password. After you've signed up you can visit your Twitter site by going to twitter.com/username (hopefully it's obvious that you fill in your own username). If you know of friends or colleagues who are also using Twitter, you can visit their pages by using the same technique, provided you know their username. Once you get a few friends on Twitter, you can then follow what they are all doing by clicking on the "Recent" tab.
[edit] Make a Tweet
A post to Twitter is called a tweet. Once you have logged into your account, you can write in the space provided. You have only 140 characters to play with, so make them count. There are other ways to make tweets. You can use an instant messaging program such as AIM, or Google Talk, or you can text (SMS) message to 40404 on your mobile phone. Your messages should post almost instantly.
[edit] Make Some Friends
Making friends in Twitter is easy. Just go to the page of a user and add them as a friend by clicking the “Follow” button. Now you can read their tweets. In order for them to see what you tweet about, they need to "Follow" you back. You can follow anyone you want. Some Twitter users have literally thousands of followers (hello Scobleizer). Once they have followed you back, you can have a two way conversation and the real fun begins.
For Faculty Academy 2008, we have created a user named facultyacademy. Go to twitter.com/facultyacademy and follow this "person". Once you're followed back you'll be in like Flynn (or Flint if you prefer the 1967 movie). You can then watch the activity on the Twitter website, and on the TwitterCamp board in the atrium at the conference.
Happy tweeting!
